"The International Sculpture Symposium movement was spearheaded by Karl Prantl in Austria in 1959. This initiative grew from the need to facilitate communication and exchange between members of the international sculpture community. The first international sculpture symposium took place in an abandoned stone quarry in Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland. Sculptors from around the world joined together to produce a permanent public artwork from local stone, a dynamic which would provide the model for many symposia to follow.
Since then international sculpture symposia have been held in numerous towns and cities around the world, including Lindabrunn, Austria, and Hagi, Japan, (a town known for its pottery). The first international sculpture symposia in the United States (and the first on a college campus) was in 1965 on the California State University, Long Beach campus in Long Beach, California." John has been particpating in symposiums in the US and other countries since the 1990's. Some are one time events for him, such as the 2016 symposium in Changsa, China. Others, in the US such as the Indiana Limestone Symposium and Stonefest, just outside Seattle, he has participated in multiple times. Sometimes the artists work on individual works. Other times they may work on common projects.

Changsa, China 2016
Last January I was invited to participate in the Changsha International Figurative Sculpture Festival in China. Initially I was reluctant but then accepted, seeing this as an opportunity to create on a monumental scale. The contract recognized that one month was too short a time to complete a monumental stone sculpture. Each artist must therefore provide the organizers with a scale model so that the work can be roughed out before the arrival of the artists in Changsha. I sent my model a month in advance of the deadline.

Indiana Limestone Symposiums
The Indiana Limestone Symposium is a series of outdoor stone carving workshops that are held each summer on the grounds of the Bybee Stone Company in the heart of the historic Indiana stone belt in Ellettsville, Indiana. Everyone interested in learning to carve is welcome, from beginners to advanced carvers. New this year, pay-by-the-day hand carving classes for teens and adults offer an opportunity to sample the experience. Workshops are taught by nationally known sculptors.

Stonefest Symposiums
Marenakos Rock Center adopted the role of sponsoring this most extraordinary event in the Pacific Northwest and called it StoneFest. StoneFest is now the annual gathering for those who simply LOVE STONE. This educational venue offers something that is a unique experience for the stonemason, the carver, architect, landscape designer, or simply those who simply want to further their connection with stone. Each year we gather a stellar panel of professionals from the natural stone industry to create hands-on learning projects, presentations, demonstrations, audio/visual talks and discussion forums. Since 2005, StoneFest has grown to average 80-100 participants that come from Seattle to Singapore, or Duvall to Dublin…
