There are two guiding principles to my sculpture. The first is beginning each piece as an abstract sculpture waiting for the moment when images present themselves from our deep subconscious well. The second is the ancient technique of profile carving to release the vision from the block.
The principle requires that you remove approximately 30 percent of the weight of the block while making your abstract. This allows for a close examination of the block and get a lot of material out of the way in a stress free environment. Profile carving is the method of looking at all profiles and bringing them into agreement. The profile of one side of the leg is in relation to the profile of the other side of the leg. Both are lines that are either correct or incorrect. Sculpture is reduced to simple yes or no answers so mistakes and breakage are rare. Always look behind the chisel. If you can see the tip of the chisel you are carving wrong! Stone should never come close to your face! |
